An instructor of 50 years from Delhi University who enjoys going hiking on occasion to get some exercise and take a break from life has been exploring remote regions within Himalayan Mountains since 1990, long before it became widely known among Indian people.

Since beginning my solo travel journey across India in 2017, there have been some truly inspirational people that I have come across.
As I began traveling alone to India, the initial days weren’t particularly comfortable; yet, I made up my mind not to hesitate as my fellow travelers either worked against my plans or pulled back out at the last moment; no one should impede on my dreams of travel!
Here I will admit the truth – on my very first solo trip in India I felt extremely anxious.
Prior to that experience, I’d never had much opportunity to spend time alone and was uncertain of the potential safety concerns if I ventured out on my own. Furthermore, as an introvert it can be daunting talking with new people or meeting strangers; something which never felt comfortable to me before this trip.
Over time I’ve become more social. Through meeting incredible individuals like those mentioned earlier, my experience inspired me to leave 9-5 work and become a digital nomad with plans of exploring different corners of the globe.
Traveling independently through India could transform you into a better individual just like it has changed me. Benefits gained and adventures experienced can add new depth to everyday life.
Framedventures was conceptualised as a travel blog in India; therefore it only took me minutes before discussing its subject in depth.
As part of my three years’ of solo travel experience in India, this article will outline all that I know about solo traveling across this vast nation. I hope that by following in my footsteps and making this adventureous decision for yourself you too may experience life-altering adventures!
This blog entry will prove especially helpful to solo travellers making their initial journeys through India on their own.
What exactly is solo travel
“Solo travel” refers to traveling solo without depending on friends or family members for your journey across the globe. Instead of depending on them for companionship on this adventure alone.
At the core, however, is being aware of what solo travel doesn’t entail – there can be numerous misperceptions associated with travelling solo in India.
It’s likely that you’ll feel lonely and uninterested while traveling
Have you experienced travel boredom while alone?
I often encounter this question when traveling alone.
Let me share with you one key detail.
Solo travel doesn’t just involve exploring unfamiliar territory alone – the experience of meeting other travellers makes traveling solo so fulfilling! Travel alone during any adventure you desire; meeting new people along the way only adds more enjoyment of traveling solo!
What I love best about online dating is being able to choose who and when you talk. And I also appreciate having complete freedom over when, where, and for how long we talk.
The idea of traveling on your own is frightening
As someone accustomed to traveling with family and friends, traveling alone was challenging at first for me – much as it may be for anyone taking their first adventure vacation.
Once you start exploring on your own, your tension should ease naturally and the world will seem much safer than what has been reported by media and people close to you.
Indian travelers, in particular, love meeting tourists and exchanging cultural experiences with them. From my personal experience I can say they are some of the friendliest individuals you will come across when travelling there.
Have the added excitement of meeting fellow travelers who share similar plans. This experience could make for unforgettable adventures!
Be wary of anything you hear or read from “trustworthy sources”, since only by experiencing an environment can you truly evaluate its truths for yourself.
Once you explore your vacation destination, your views about it could certainly evolve positively.
You will require money for travel on your own
Traveling alone used to be difficult and required considerable investment; thanks to modern internet technology and advances, traveling on a tight budget has never been simpler!
Assuming you travel alone instead of in groups, chances are higher that you will save more by doing it this way.
I have met college students travelling between Kanyakumari in India to Jammu and Kashmir by taxi with only minimal funds in their pockets, as well as backpackers offering services on Workaway platforms to get free accommodation and meals in exchange for offering services at various locations.
Your total expenses depend entirely upon which kind of adventure you want to embark upon.
Hostels and platforms like Workaway or Couchsurfing (more about these later) provide solo travelers with lower costs when they travel alone, which allows them to focus more on what matters to them while traveling solo.
Traveling as part of a group presents different challenges than travelling solo; you must carefully consider your partners’ individual interests before reaching an understanding that meets these priorities.
I can no longer recall all the times I needed to make adjustments in order to accommodate my companions, such as dining at fancy restaurants and staying at luxurious hotels – thus increasing travel expenses. While these things certainly add enjoyment, they should not dictate your experience in your destination vacation spot as much.
Undoubtedly, you have experienced similar obstacles while traveling with family or friends.
Solo travel is more time-consuming and requires planning and more work
As a solo traveler, instead of following an itinerary as part of a group, your time may be better spent exploring an unknown territory in your own way and taking in your surroundings. Solo traveling offers many more interesting and thrilling opportunities compared to travelling as part of an organized tour group.
Planning individual travel can also be much less taxing than organizing for an entire group, since you are free to select what activities and methods of doing them you prefer – no one tells you how or expects of you how to conduct yourself and there is no answer required from others!
Going with your gut makes planning solo trips simpler, making them enjoyable experiences with no one telling what or where you should go next. By being your own boss and creating your itinerary yourself, solo travel planning becomes both effortless and satisfyingly fun!
Solo travel is to be reserved for bachelors.
As part of an adventurous group who participated in Uttarakhand’s Brahma Tal Trek, my experience included trekking alongside an elderly female trekker from Kolkata who took time out from her work to join us trekkers at half his age – finishing along the same trail!
While hiking Goecha La Trek in Sikkim, I met someone who was married with a 40-year old wife and had one child together. Additionally, this couple would frequently take time off together from life’s demands by traveling solo for short excursions like Himalayan expeditions; she’d recently done one herself!
There is much more that could be shared, yet I hope you understand my point: traveling alone doesn’t matter whether it is your goal to gain personal growth or experience.
Making the most out of solo travel lies within its inherent advantages.
Choose when and what to do without being told otherwise by others. Don’t allow anyone else to dictate to you what should or shouldn’t happen to your life.
If traveling is something that truly interests you and you want to experience it firsthand, you will always be willing to set off no matter the situation at the time.
The reasons to travel alone?
Travel is an invaluable opportunity to gain new life skills that could benefit you for the future, making traveling an invaluable educational opportunity if your intention is pure.
Here are five benefits of traveling solo:
Then you’ll be able to make yourself independent.
At first it can be intimidating being on your own; but after experiencing more traveling solo adventures it becomes much simpler. Being self-reliant and free to pursue whatever interests you like are key advantages to travel solo.
Travel routes, exploring an area over time or simply unwinding at your hotel – are all possible with today’s technology! You have endless ways of creating the trip of your dreams!
Your only accountable is yourself and no one else.
Additionally, alone time provides an opportunity to relax and unwind that would not otherwise be available when in a crowd (more on this in future posts).
What would the most powerful method be?
You’ll become more social and have more fun with your friends.
Engaging with others and discussing experiences increases our compassion, openness, and socialisation.
Flexibility can be gained when meeting people from diverse walks of life; when learning how to interact and adapt with everyone regardless of behavior or culture.
As an example, in the past I wasn’t certain whether I could form friendships with those five years younger or older than me; now however, that fear has dissipated as I have shared rooms at hostels with individuals of differing ages and traveled solo.
Acquaintance-making will expand both your social circle and networks – which could prove invaluable over time.
The more you know about yourself, the better
Since arriving in India in 2017, I can safely say I’ve learned more about myself since then than at any point throughout my entire lifetime.
Raised in an orthodox, middle class Indian family is likely to limit your time alone as family and friends remain nearby at all times, plus your parents likely make decisions regarding your career path before even consulting you about them themselves.
Traveling alone allows for reflection upon past experiences and finding out new aspects about oneself through each journey adventure.
As soon as I embarked upon my inaugural Himalayan trekking trip in 2018, I became completely entranced by its beauty and music that it made it impossible for me to return back into corporate work environments afterwards.
My experience piqued my curiosity of trekking mountains. Within two years, I made up my mind to become an online nomad and travel around the globe.
After embarking on your travel adventure solo, it can often lead to surprising discoveries that provide life-altering revelations.
You’ll become a problem solver and a decision maker
As any solo traveler knows, traveling alone is never easy. A snowstorm, for instance, could leave you stuck mid-hill due to a landslide; or your hotel reservation could get cancelled abruptly and unexpectedly.
Experiences like these provide invaluable lessons that help prepare us for similar events in the future.
As problems arise, learn to address them as they come and come out unscathed from behind them. With each challenge overcome remember that each problem created an opportunity for growth both intellectually and personally. With every difficulty overcome it marks progress toward personal advancement – so take pride in having overcome each one with greater agility!
Life skills such as critical thinking are an invaluable way to advance in any profession and build lasting connections throughout one’s journeys.
Your curiosity will grow and you’ll become more educated
Knowledge can only truly be gained by traveling and experiencing firsthand what others know only through tests and books can teach us. While such avenues of education will undoubtedly aid you on your travels, nothing compares with first-hand travel experience for expanding our minds and knowledge.
Traveling alone to any new area presents many unexpected facts that even Google can’t reveal, which will eventually build into an intrigue and start you questioning every element in the environment around you.
Explore and discover more of your surroundings; this can help encourage further discovery of what lies around us all the time. This process never stops – only once the loop closes it can we move onto something else!
